I personally felt it was on the obvious side anyway especially if you metagame it by the culprit's ages, (I went in realizing that Dane Gustavia's son would likely be the culprit, which means you just need to narrow down how many men in the cast are in their early 20s) but I think they wanted to make the reveal of the mastermind an even bigger shock. That's not really me praising it as I think it has the effect of the case being loaded up with WAY too much shit and it feels like they instead taped together three unrelated cases all of them simultaneiously rushed and drawn out due to the pacing. You could cut down a massive segment of the grand turnabout and have it more focused by simply revealing that Justine is John's mother in case 3. Give her a break from the case and have Franziska come in and defend Kate instead. It'd fit the theme of the case better since it's Von Karma and Edgeworth's children both clashing in the present day just as their parents did in the past and it's one less case where instead of Justine threatening you and making boring remarks about the goddess of the law, she just gets to be a mommy worried sick about if her son is safe when there was literally poison gas spread throughout the museum.
