After h3 Red has gained control over 7 additional squares, which is the most of all the opening moves, apart from h4. Queen's Pawn Opening, 1. g3 [ edit] As opposed to h3, the move g3 opens on the light squares and it only opens up a diagonal for the bishop, eyeing Green. Usually Red follows up with Qg2 to develop the queen on the light squares. Compared to h3 it is slower in terms of queen development and it gives Red control over fewer squares. It also gives Blue the opportunity to open with the stronger move c8 to develop the queen and bishop. Therefore, it kind of gives away the initiative to Blue and Green and hence g3 is considered weaker than h3. Double Push King's Pawn Opening, 1. h4 [ edit] If h3 is such a good move, then why not push the pawn one square further to gain more space and control more squares? Generally, it is considered better for king safety to keep the pawn on h3, where it can block possible checks from either side. Moreover, on h4 the pawn is undefended. Thus, pushing the pawn to h4 weakens Red's position.

Since the seventeenth century, has described what is commonly regarded as the most fully developed procedure of imitative counterpoint. Most fugues open with a short main theme, the subject, which then sounds successively in each voice (after the first voice is finished stating the subject, a second voice repeats the subject at a different pitch, and other voices repeat in the same way); when each voice has entered, the exposition is complete. This is often followed by a connecting passage, or episode, developed from previously heard material; further "entries" of the subject then are heard in related keys. Episodes (if applicable) and entries are usually alternated until the "final entry" of the subject, by which point the music has returned to the opening key, or tonic, which is often followed by closing material, the coda. In this sense, a fugue is a style of composition, rather than a fixed structure. Exposition The table below illustrates the structure of the fugue exposition: Voice Themes played Soprano Subject Counter subject 1 Counter subject 2 Answer Alto Bass Read "Forms: Contrapuntal Composition Techniques: The Fugue" here.

If there's anything we know about Barris's work, it's that he truly honors the capabilities of a power woman in a busy household - à la Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) in Black-ish - and we can't wait to see what he has in store for Union's role. © 20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, (behind) Piper Perabo, A. Fugueuse episode 10.5

Introduction The first page of the manuscript of the "Ricercar a 6" BWV 1079 by Johann Sebastian Bach. In music, a fugue is a contrapuntal compositional technique in two or more voices, built on a subject (theme) that is introduced at the beginning in imitation (repetition at different pitches) and recurs frequently in the course of the composition. The English term fugue originated in the sixteenth century and is derived from the French word fugue or the Italian fuga. This in turn comes from Latin, also fuga, which is itself related to both fugere ("to flee") and fugare ("to chase"). The adjectival form is fugal. Variants include fughetta (literally, "a small fugue") and fugato (a passage in fugal style within another work that is not a fugue). A fugue usually has three sections: an exposition, a development, and finally, a recapitulation that contains the return of the subject in the fugue's tonic key, though not all fugues have a recapitulation. In the Middle Ages, the term was widely used to denote any works in canonic style; by the Renaissance, it had come to denote specifically imitative works.
